Supporting Early Language Development
A school improvement course, focused on ensuring the very best outcomes in early language development.
As we are sure that you are aware, the development of early language is a crucial pillar of a child’s personal growth. However, according to research by Speech and Language UK, at least 1.7 million children in this country are behind with talking and understanding of words. Wider research and data confirm this picture. The percentage of pupils formally identified as having a primary special need in speech, language and communication is steadily rising - up to 22.5% in 2021, compared with 18.8% in 2015.3.
Programme aims:
•To understand a working model of language through which to observe children’s language development through the primary years, and beyond.
•To understand the stages of ‘typical’ language development concentrating on the expected milestones that occur during primary years (ages 4 to 11)
•To develop practical classroom skills and techniques for quality first teaching in YR and KS1 that will create skilled and confident classroom practitioners that improve outcomes for all children.
•To investigate tools to identify children who may not be developing language skills as expected and ways to support those children in class.
Who should attend
The course is primarily aimed at those in early years leadership such as the school’s Headteacher, Early Years Lead and SENDCO. The staff members will take responsibility for the cascading of training within their school. It is essential that you have your Headteacher's support before signing on this programme as ALL 6 workshops MUST be attended. We are limiting this course to 1 person per school but there will be opportunities built in, to bring along relevant colleagues.
The English Hub programme is offering a six session course, designed to equip teachers and leaders with a practical pedagogical understanding of both typical language development and also how to support pupils who are struggling with language acquisition:
