Reading Planet Rocket Phonics

Key features of the SSP programme
The Reading Planet Rocket Phonics teaching and learning programme provides all the planning and resources required to deliver a complete SSP programme. Reading Planet Rocket Phonics has been carefully devised and mapped out by phonics expert, Abigail Steel, and endorsed by Debbie Hepplewhite MBE, author of Floppy’s Phonics and owner of Phonics International Ltd. The programme provides a clear, thorough and coherent route through all the alphabetic code (GPCs) required by children to achieve success in word reading in Reception, and to become fluent, confident readers by the end of Key Stage 1, meeting or exceeding national curriculum expectations and those of the Phonics Screening Check.

The programme’s sequence of letter-sounds is based on the original Letters and Sounds progression, but applies a steadier pace (c. two GPCs per week) so that children have time to embed knowledge of the letter-sounds and tricky words, master the core phonics skills and keep up, rather than catch up. It also subsumes Phase 4 so that non-CVC words are introduced sooner, opening up a much richer vocabulary to ensure reading success by the end of Key Stage 1; and maps out a very clear and logical pathway through the Phase 5 GPCs.

Other features of the programme:
• Organised around a clear teaching framework that is applied consistently throughout: blending-focus lessons on Mondays and Wednesdays; segmenting-focus lessons on Tuesdays and Thursdays; and a flexible day on Fridays (for consolidation, common exception words focus, assessment and/or enrichment)
• Provides fully supportive Teacher’s Guides, including whole-year, half-termly and weekly overviews as well as step-by-step daily lesson plans, tracking sheets and a full range of assessments (including a Baseline and Half-Termly assessments, as well as Phonics Screening Check practice papers)
• Includes a range of colourful and child-friendly resources that are fully aligned with the programme, including Flashcards, innovative teaching storybooks (‘Big Books’), Friezes and Sounds Mats and a complete library of fully decodable reading practice books (Target Practice and Rocket Phonics readers)
• Enables pupils to take pride in and ownership of their learning through their personal Pupil Practice Booklets, in which they are able to practise and apply their newly-acquired phonics skills, as well as consolidate prior learning
• Offers both print and digital components (the latter via the Reading Planet Rocket Phonics Online subscription) that make it ideal for blended learning and fully adaptable for remote learning should the need arise

The programme consists of the following print components:
2 boxed sets of physical Flashcards (70 cards in each set)
48 fully-decodable Target Practice reading books, each one focusing on a small
group of GPCs
114 fully-decodable Rocket Phonics reading books for additional practice and
